Critical leadership opportunities for impact investors
Despite some uncertainty in the markets, there is no question that the transition to a net-zero world will require a fundamental shift of how we produce, consume, and travel.
This was part of the inspiration behind the launch of our Impact Growth Fund last year, designed to fund businesses that can help resolve climate change, repair and rehabilitate our biosphere. The Fund focuses efforts toward decarbonisation, clean energy and pollution management among other crucial impact verticals.
We see these challenges not only as golden opportunities for impact investments, but as proof that financial returns need not be sacrificed when investing to drive environmental change.
As whole industries stand to be transformed, novel opportunities continue to emerge as each field of solutions is developed. For example, clean energy has been identified as a critical challenge, which has revealed the need to also address bottlenecks in clean energy deployment to the grid. Increased storage and demand management will play a vital role, which is why we backed Red Earth Energy, an Australian leader in distributed energy storage, demand management and deployment software due to their ability to ride the leading edge of this wave.
An example of where we see another opportunity at present is the many organisations committed to reducing their carbon footprints, yet still missing targets or using low quality offsetting. We believe these challenges must be addressed with both advanced technologies that can meaningfully reduce greenhouse gas emissions and high quality carbon offsetting solutions that can assist biodiversity. Our Trace, which was also funded out of our Impact Growth Fund, addresses supply chain pressure for companies, with data-driven reduction plans, monitoring and proven frameworks for reducing carbon emissions.
Another critical opportunity is in the next generation of net-zero fuels. We are proud to have invested in Jet Zero, a company developing large scale projects that will transform carbon sequestering agricultural crops into high quality sustainable aviation fuel.
These are only some examples of where we continue to harness critical challenges as opportunities to back robust commercial vehicles that will make lasting impact. We encourage governments to join us in backing ventures that can catalyse transformative shifts in industrial industries.
Here is a short summary of our top solutions to navigating current market conditions:
1. We foster a long-term vision:
Amidst the ebb and flow of markets, we maintain a long-term perspective to guide our decisions. We resist the allure of short-term volatility, staying true to our investment strategy and vision of a sustainable planet.
2. Our investment mandate is focused, driving impact with precision:
Our mandate serves as a lens through which we actively invest in companies growing in proven markets, providing solutions to the challenges of the environment and proven profitability. We also strategically advise the businesses within our portfolio to support their navigation throughout times of uncertainty.
3. Harmonising our investments through diversification:
Investing across a diverse range of environmental businesses enables our portfolio to gain resilience in choppy markets and become a force for sustainable change.
4. Social and legislative requirements for businesses are rising:
Businesses face increasing social and legal expectations. This, in addition to technological advancement, means even smaller companies can become competitive with incumbents.
5. Seeing the broader picture of great investment opportunities:
While there has been market uncertainty, interest rates are now near their peak and capital has been scarce. This shortage of capital has meant that deal terms are more favourable than they have been in many years.
6. We are here as Impact Stewards:
We currently provide impact investment talks and presentations to support investors on the impact investment path. We believe that impact stewards and financial experts will be a must in navigating the complexities of the market.
Conclusion
Impact investing is more than just a trend. It represents a shift in how we think about the role of capital in society. For those who seek both a financial return and a meaningful, positive change in the world, impact investing provides a compelling avenue.
