Focus on the company, not the index
With value in short supply, managers usually berate the lack of opportunities they are seeing. However Graeme Carson from Cyan IM told us that early stage companies are presenting a lot of opportunities, and went on to discuss his process with us. Graeme emphasised really getting to know the underlying businesses, and not being distracted by index movements. He told us:
“Understand the company, where it’s going, and how it’s going to get there. Then risk-adjust how much capital to invest. As they prove themselves up, invest more, not less. But the ones that don’t work, be brutal.”
