Fundamental versus Technical - it doesn't have to be a decision

Fundamental versus Technical - it doesn't have to be a decision. Karl Siegling from Cadence Capital says people often refer to themselves as either fundamental or technical investors and feel so strongly about one style of investing that they engage in heated academic debates. The view at Cadence is that investors should use whatever tools are at their disposal. Fundamental analysis combined with technical analysis has a greater probability of achieving that than one style alone. Siegling says that it doesn't matter how fundamentally cheap or expensive a stock is, if the share price is falling then it's not a good move to buy. And conversely, if it's rising it's not a good time to sell. Siegling explains their thinking and how they entered the very successful Macquarie Bank (ASX:MQG) trade during the depths of the GFC - it's worth a read. (VIEW LINK)
