The Wall Street Journal has released an article packed full of charts that gives some great perspective on China, its markets and how they compare globally. The key points that the WSJ makes are: 1) The combined value of China's stock markets eclipses many of the world's biggest exchanges… 2) China’s markets together are in the top 10 in terms of number of listed companies. 3) Trading volumes are significantly higher than other major markets… 4) Much of the Chinese stock market doesn't trade freely. The government or company founders own most of the shares. 5) Numbers of stock account openings have been growing rapidly as the market rallied over the past year… 6) as has the amount of margin lending - borrowing to fund share purchases - until very recently. 7) China's biggest industries are the largely state-owned financial, energy and mining sectors. 8) ETFs tracking Chinese A-shares have grown in size during the past few years.
