The investors behind Thorney Opportunities does read like the who's who of corporate Australia. The Fund has been set up by billionaire investor Alex Waislitz and looks to engage in constructive dialogue about the direction of certain companies. Backers include names such as former Fairfax chairman Ron Walker, former Macquarie Group chief executive Allan Moss and boutique fund managers Geoff Wilson and David Paradice. The Fund is being viewed as a mouthpiece for board members and institutional investors who are concerned about being punished for expressing conflicting views to those of company management. A lot of board members are on multiple boards and some of the institutional investors are worried that if they are activist on one company, they will not get access to another -- they will be effectively punished for speaking up where they have a different view of the board on strategy.
