Our latest analysis of the data on US and Aussie bankruptcies is enclosed below. While both economies have been incredibly resilient in the face of record rate hikes care of the excess consumer savings buffers built up during the pandemic, US bankruptcies are now the equal worst since 2010 (in line with 2020) while Aussie insolvencies are the worst since 2015/16. In the US, the weakest industry sectors are consumer discretionary, healthcare, industrials, financials and consumer staples. In Australia, the most insolvencies have been seen in construction, hotels/food services, other services, and retail trade. As the excess consumer savings buffers are exhausted in the US this year and in Australia next year, one should expect this bankruptcy and default cycle to increase sharply to what are likely to be the worst numbers we have seen since the GFC in the US and the 1991 recession in Australia. This is what rate hikes are meant to do: destroy demand, kill weak businesses, create job losses, improve labour productivity, and apply downward pressure to unit wage costs. Coolabah has been forecasting a big default cycle in high-risk debt since late 2021 when we argued that markets were underestimating the risks associated with large interest rate increases in response to sticky services inflation.
