Only 30% of the world's 5.2 billion mobile users have smartphones - still plenty of room for growth. That is just one of the highlights from a comprehensive report just released by former Morgan Stanley managing director and analyst Mary Meeker. The report on internet trends in 2014 shows that whilst growth in overall internet usage is slowing mobile data consumption is rapidly accelerating. In fact, mobile data consumption has grown 81% year on year with video consumption now accounting for 22% of all data used on mobiles. Interestingly, in China mobile internet usage now accounts for 80% of total internet consumption. This represents the greatest level of critical mass for mobile web globally and puts China at the front of the m-commerce revolution. Trends like these bode well for data providers such as Telstra.
