He says the approach is likely to be best suited to investors with long time horizons as well as looking at exposure to international equities. Gardner says, Many of the world's most serious social challenges are caused by secular forces such as population growth and demographic change, and the problems are expected to grow rapidly in coming years. One approach to filtering investment opportunities may not be to choose a particular geography or sector but to identify stocks that are highly exposed to such secular investment themes. Gardner highlights Education, Technology, Obesity, Ageing Population, Urbanisation and Energy as the six themes he thinks present the best opportunities in the future.
