After a modest lull through December – let’s face it, the bulls were tired – January has seen a resumption of the bullish trend and it seems the rally is back on. US markets punched all-time highs again this week with Trump splashing the cash on AI via his US$500 billion Stargate program, whilst the Aussie market is within shouting distance of its own all-time high. Yes, there are the worries and the naysayers – UBS says six out of seven conditions are met for a US stockmarket bubble – but for the moment, the bulls have it.

We’ve been busy, releasing our Outlook Series throughout January which is nearing its conclusion. It has been a cracking series with some fantastic insights, and we’ve featured a few of the most popular pieces below. With the entire funds management community back at their desks post Australia Day, it’s now full steam ahead into 2025.

Thanks for joining us again for another ride. Let’s go!

Should you own stocks, gold, or bitcoin? Legendary investor who predicted the ’87 crash has an answer

Record levels of government debt, money printing and price inflation as a consequence of pandemic policies have arguably rewritten the rules of investing. Hedge fund legend Paul Tudor-Jones has revealed his shockingly simple strategy to identify what investments may offer the best returns in the post-pandemic world. The simple strategy might not be for your parents or conservative financial advisers, but it's worth reading about for anyone who wants to make money in markets. Tudor-Jones explains what famous asset class he thinks you should own here.

Is Australia losing its reputation as an income investing paradise?

This stat recently caught our attention - the dividend yield of the Commonwealth Bank is now less than the yield on its own 12-month term deposit. More broadly, the dividend yield of the Australian market is now just 3.8%, a long way from the 5.3% peak of 2022. So, given Australia's high dividend paying culture is (so often) a product of the Big Four banks and Big Three miners, is Australia losing its "income investors' paradise" reputation? Or is this just a cyclical blip in an otherwise fantastic structural story? We explore this question - and provide some tangible ideas if you're worried - in this wire.

Netflix was founded in 1997 as a service that shipped DVDs to customers by mail. In 2007, it launched streaming movies and TV over the Internet. Today, it has a market capitalisation of over US$400 billion, over 300 million paid subscribers, and an operating margin of well over 25%.

And to think I’m old enough to remember when no one wanted to buy this stock in April 2022. But for those who were brave enough to dip their toe in and back Netflix’s introduction of discounted paid tiers as well as its content plans, your investment would have paid off handsomely. This chart shows how that discounted paid tier has affected Netflix’s average monthly revenue per member. Sure, it’s not growing. But in an environment where so many customers are cutting costs, it’s impressive to see a company like Netflix keep its margins and average revenues intact. Its next challenge, however, is to hang onto those customers as it passes through yet another price increase.

Will more customers choose to hit the “O” button and stop paying to see Squid Game? Or will enough people hit the “X” button, sign up, and keep shareholders happy? We’ll find out at its next quarterly result in April.

Weekly Poll

Last year the ASX 200 Accumulation Index returned 11.4%. Can the index match or better that return this in 2025?

a) Yes, the market will keep rallying and beat last year's return
b) No, the market will finish higher, but won't match last year's 11.4%
c) No, the party is over and the market will finish in the red this year
d) No idea... and these predictions are useless anyway :)
