6 shocking predictions for 2024 and beyond
It's been said that the only time professional investors come up with a prediction for markets is when they are asked. But flip that notion on its head for a second. Without predictions, investors would have no way of knowing what is going on in a fund manager's mindset. Without S&P 500 forecasts, there would be no sense of direction that punters can hang their hat on. And yes - if truth be told - the financial media would have one less idea for headlines.
But nonetheless, predictions are incredibly entertaining. They can help spark some debate and a chance for investors to challenge their own worldview.
For instance, investors who started in the markets after 2008 would be forgiven for thinking that the only direction for interest rates is down (and in some cases, through the floor). But as 2022 demonstrated, there is also such a thing as rising interest rates. And if you believe Christopher Joye, CIO and Portfolio Manager at Coolabah Capital, that world will not return for the foreseeable future.
Investors and consumers alike have been hit by soaring food prices. But as the fight for food security ramps up amid a quickly-changing climate, should you be worried that prices will rise even higher? Dania Zinurova from Wilson Asset Management has just the prediction for you.
How about the return of travel? Literally every millennial and their dog is either in Europe or Bali. But Fidelity International's Casey Mclean has some words for you if you think this travel rush is going to last into 2024 and beyond.
Andrew McKie from Elston Asset Management has some sage advice for financial advisers in need of some inspiration to keep going in their respective profession. Marcus Burns of Spheria Asset Management thinks that small-caps are due for another run. And Dr David Allen of Plato Investment Management is calling the end of a global health crisis.
Yes, you read that right. The (total) end of a global health crisis.
